Recently I attended the local community gardens, at Peregian Beach. It was a beautiful experience and confirmed my belief that we need to continually care for our environment, giving back to the earth appropriately of that which we take.
Composting at home
In 2016 I moved into a house with a very small garden. The heavy clay soil had poor drainage and no worms. My mission was to call in the worms to help break down the clay and improve the nutrition of the soil. Using a large saucepan pot with lid I stored my daily vegetable/herb/fruit cuttings and coffee grounds. It was my mini-compost saucepan in the kitchen. Every 3 days or so I would be digging a little hole into the garden beds to fill up with the kitchen compost. I covered the kitchen scraps with little soil and sugarcane mulch.
This one small act has now become part of my weekly routine. I’ve never had unwanted pests in the garden and my herbs, vegetables, fruit and flowers are flourishing. My dog has never dug up the kitchen scraps either. Sometimes I get extra vegetables or fruit popping up, that came from seeds in the kitchen scraps. I have had to relocate a few avocado trees.
Whether you own your home or rent, anyone can dig into the soil their kitchen whole food scraps to rejuvenate the soil. Your small act of earth kindness will uplift your soul.
My next task was to address the packaging issue of plastic and bubble wrap.
Eco friendly packaging
Today I’ve ordered comPOST satchels for sending the Bach Flower Essence remedies to customers within Australia. These satchels are fully compostable that will break down in your soil within 3 months. The bottles will be wrapped in corrugated cardboard (no more bubble wrapping). Cardboard can be used to lay the foundation of your garden bed, on top of the grass! Yay, moving to eco friendly business packaging products. I’m feeling very excited. 🙂
